How It All Started
I grew up 40 kilometres from Koman Lake. As a kid in the 1990s, my father used to drive us up to the dam overlook on summer evenings. The water was always this impossible shade of green, and the cliffs just dropped straight down into it. We'd stand there and stare.
When the tourist ferries started running in the early 2000s, I started taking friends from Shkodër down to Shala on weekends. They loved it. Then their friends asked to come. By 2012, I had my own boat and my first paying guests -- a German family who found us through a travel blog and sent a WhatsApp message out of nowhere.
That family came back three years in a row. They still do. That's the thing about Shala River -- people don't just visit it once.

Our Guides
All of our guides are from the local area. They speak English and Italian -- and they know where the best swimming spots are, which cliffs echo, and exactly how light hits the water at 4pm in July.
Our Boats
We run small wooden motorboats, each taking up to 8 passengers. Small groups mean you're not stuck on a crowded tourist ferry -- you stop when you want, drift where you want.

We're based at Blini Parking, Koman Lake, Shkodër County. If you're coming from Tirana, it's about 4.5 hours by bus and transfer. From Shkodër, about 90 minutes.
Honest Answers to Common Questions
Is Shala River worth the trip from Tirana?
Yes, but with one condition: you need a full day. The bus to Shkodër takes about 2.5 hours, then another 90 minutes to Koman. By the time you're on the boat, you're already in one of the most beautiful places in Europe. Rushing it would be a shame. If you're short on time, stay overnight at Guesthouse Zgiboza -- it changes everything.
How long is the actual boat ride?
About 75 minutes each way, depending on conditions. Some days we make stops if guests want to photograph a specific cliff or swim in a particular cove. We don't run to a strict timetable on private charters.
Is it safe for children?
We take young children on the boats regularly. The boats are stable and low -- nothing like an open sea vessel. We have life jackets in all sizes. Under-6s travel free. That said, the boats are small and open, so sun protection is important.
What's the water temperature?
In June it's around 17--18°C -- refreshing. July and August it reaches 22--24°C, which is genuinely warm. October drops back to 14--15°C. Most people swim from June through September.
Can I book last minute?
For shared tours, often yes -- especially on weekdays. July and August are the exception: we sometimes fill up 2--3 days ahead. Private charters have more flexibility since it's just your group, but we still need at least 24 hours' notice to arrange the guide and fuel.
